Surf Life in Imsouane
Imsouane works differently depending on how you surf. There are two main surf spots that work for different levels and tides.
A forgiving beach break, a point break at the peak and an absolute heaven for longboarders. Its mellow takeoffs, endless glide, and various sections make it perfect for beginners, intermediates, and advanced surfers working on style, noserides, or smooth turns. Rides here can last for minutes, not just seconds.
Best conditions during low tide.

A mix of beach break and point break, more powerful and best known as the shortboarder’s go-to spot. When the swell gets bigger, Cathedral offers fast, punchy sections and plenty of room to push performance.
Best time to surf during high tide.

Learning To Surf
Imsouane is one of the most beginner-friendly surf towns in Morocco. The long, forgiving waves in the Bay give you more time to practice pop-ups, turns and positioning without feeling rushed.
Most beginners stay for at least a week, either through a surf camp or with private lessons. The relaxed atmosphere, walkable town and consistent surf make it easy to focus on progression while still enjoying a slower pace of life.
Best for:
First-time surfers | Surf camp travellers | Solo travellers | Intermediate surfers looking to improve fundamentals
Chasing Performance Waves
While the Bay often gets most of the attention, Cathedral is where many shortboarders spend their time. With more power, steeper take-offs and faster sections, it offers a completely different experience when the conditions line up.
Depending on swell and tide, Cathedral can deliver fun performance waves without the crowds found in many other well-known surf destinations. It’s best suited for confident surfers who are comfortable reading the lineup and adapting to changing conditions.
Many surfers choose to stay for the consistency of the Bay while using Cathedral whenever conditions become more exciting.
Best for:
Intermediate and advanced surfers | Shortboarders | Performance surfing |Â Independent surf travellers
Longboard Life
Few places in Morocco are as loved by longboarders as Imsouane. The Bay offers long, mellow walls that invite smooth turns, cross-steps and drawn-out rides rather than aggressive manoeuvres.
Many surfers come here specifically to slow down, spend more time on the wave and focus on style. It’s the kind of place where sunrise sessions turn into long coffees, where people stay longer than planned and where surfing becomes part of a daily rhythm rather than a checklist.
Looking for a board? Longboard rentals are available locally, making it easy to travel light and still surf every day.

Best time to visit
The main surf season runs from September and October through March and April, when Atlantic swells become more consistent and the Bay delivers its famous long rides.
From March to August, conditions are generally smaller and less reliable for surfing. Strong coastal winds are common during this period, making the town feel cooler than many visitors expect.
For a balance of warm weather, long days and enjoyable surf conditions, August through November is often considered the sweet spot.
How to get there
Imsouane sits on Morocco’s Atlantic coast between Essaouira and Agadir and can be reached from several major airports.
• Agadir Airport (2 hours)Â
• Essaouira Airport (2 hours)
• Marrakech Airport (3 hours)
Souk to Surf operates a popular shuttle service connecting Marrakech, Agadir and many of Morocco’s best-known surf towns.
A rental car offers the most flexibility for exploring the coastline, while taxis are a convenient option if you’re heading directly to Imsouane.
Many surf camps also arrange airport transfers, so it’s worth checking with your accommodation before booking separate transport.
